Welcome to Balla Balla Community Centre. This centre is a great means to make connections to others and the community by taking part in the many occasions and activities they provide.

They are a non-profit community-based Incorporated Association whose purpose is to create a secure, positive and warm environment that permits all members of the community to take part of the activities and opportunities to improve the health of the community, its connections to one another, and overall well-being in the social realm.

This is a not-for-profit association which is founded on the community’s needs and serving their communities by offering various services. The center is situated in the area of growth which runs through the city of Melbourne’s South East, Balla Balla Community Centre is situated in a prime location to meet the needs of the district and neighborhood.

The diverse population of the city is made up of homeowners who live there as well as new homeowners who are making a mark in the area that is quickly growing. The programs and activities they provide are a reflection of their local communities and are comprised of special interest programming, cooking classes, activities for children with health and wellness and activities for arts and crafts. Everyone is welcome at the Centre Therefore, drop into the Centre and get to know their friendly staff members and volunteers to learn more about the activities and programs they provideand ways to get actively involved.

These rooms and the halls can be used by local groups to hold events and celebrations. They also have a facility rental program that assists in facilitating collaboration between community groups and organizations and also the Centre that provides support and assistance.

Balla Balla Community Centre is part of the City of Casey’s 14 neighbourhood houses, and Community Learning Centres in the city.

Meaning of ‘Balla Balla’

Indigenous Significance

The roots of the word Balla are unclear. Balla Balla is a reference in the Indigenous community and is an integral part of their cultural. While there aren’t exact definitions for the term “Balla when viewed in context it could refer to two things. In another sense, the Indigenous spoken language Balla refers to’resting’ which is also a part of and a suburb, Ballarat meaning’resting area’. For various Indigenous language, Balla means ‘mud’ and is a pertinent description of the area that the facility is located in. In the beginning, throughout each year the area was situated in an area that was at the base of the marsh. It was a plentiful source of nourishment for indigenous people, and was considered as a “seasonal market”. In winter, they would walk close to the edge of the swamp to find eggs of eels and birds. Additionally, they came there to gather bark.

Historical Relevance

It is important to remember the fact that Balla Balla was also the name of one of the very first homesteads in the area and is the name that was given to Council wards within which the centre is situated. Balla Balla may have different meanings in different languages however the purpose behind giving the center the name Balla Balla was to reflect the importance of the region and also their local meaning.

What was the Story of How the Balla Balla Community Centre Started

The Balla Balla Centre project originated with funding provided by the Department of Planning and Community Development and the City of Casey, and was officially inaugurated on the 28th of April 2007. The Department of Planning and Community Development and City of Casey and the Department of Planning and Community Development City of Casey recognised the need for local groups, communities and businesses to have a space to gather. The centre was designed to address a range of requirements, from gatherings for social events, club meetings and other gatherings as well as workshops and services.

Parallel to the development phase Parallel to the development stage City of Casey applied for money to the Department of Planning and Community Development for Neighbourhood House Coordination Funding to locate a coordinator who could “establish” the Community Centre to be located at the Balla Balla Centre. The application was made with the name”Cranbourne East” Neighbourhood House.

In March 2007, Maree Cullinan became the coordinator of the establishment of the Neighbourhood House in the Cranbourne East area. The fact that there was an East-Cranbourne Neighborhood house was located inside the Balla Balla Centre caused confusion within the community. Following a survey of the community the first day of January 2008, the organisation has been changed into The Balla Balla Community Centre and was also a Steering Group established from local residents. At the time it was the Balla Balla Community Centre was managed by the Casey City Council. City of Casey.

On September 25, 2009, the Balla Balla Community Centre was established in the form of An Incorporated Association as set out in the Associations Incorporations Act 1981. Balla Balla Community Centre presented its first Annual Report on its Annual General Meeting. Balla Balla Community Centre presented its first Annual Report at the Annual General Meeting at the annual General Meeting which was held on 30 March, 2010.
