There are some amazing car facts we believe you didn’t know – though if you follow us on Facebook, you may have seen some of them. (Otherwise, Like us on Facebook for a convenient way to get info you need to sound intelligent to your friends).
We’ll start with one of our favourites, and the one alluded to in feature image. Cars in one form or another had been around since the late 1800s and by the 1920s were in mass production thanks to men like Henry Ford. (Guess which car he invented?)
But it was only in the late 1920s that car radios were made. And it still took a year or two until they were commercially available. And, man, did people freak out. A few USA states passed laws to see them banned. That’s because “experts” believed the radio would be too distracting for drivers or even that the music could lull them to sleep. Of all things to put you to sleep… However, this was waaaaaaaaaaay before the DubStep scene and the music did tend to be more jazzy and serene, so perhaps there’s something to that concern.
Still, obviously the panic subsided and now car radios are an essential we can’t live without. What’s the alternative? Singing to yourself?
“This is Major Tom to Ground Control…”
If they somehow built a freeway to the stars (considering rotation and the forces of gravity and other issues, don’t think about how it would even be possible for too long… or you’ll go insane) and you decided to travel by car to the moon to have a lunar picnic, it would take a while together.
Consider taking a sabbatical, because just driving one way – on average – would take six months if you’re going at about 100 km/h the whole time. That doesn’t include zero gravity toilet breaks.
Another interesting fact: there’s about one billion cars on the road today. Or try this: the first motor truck was built by Gottlieb Daimler. The Daimlers are the owners of the Mercedes brand. This happened in 1896 and had a four-horsepower engine with only three gears. Two forward, one reverse. We imagine it took half the day to get produce anywhere, but hey, it’s better than oxen-pulled carts and not nearly as stubborn as them.
We have lift-off!
Flying cars are soon going to be a thing. Yip, the world of the Jetsons is finally coming to life. But initially it’s only going to be big in Japan – they plan to have self-flying passenger vehicles commercially available by the early 2030s.
Though that hasn’t caused a dent in normal car production, which sits at about 165 000 cars produced every day. Each one of them with that “new car smell”… mmmmm! Smells delectable! Problem is, it’s composed of over 50 volatile organic compounds. Still, you can now get car freshers that are “new car smell” scented.
Our only question is: why did it take so long to think up this ingenious idea?
